Ryder opened the door before Nikolas could raise his fist to knock. He had sensed him, but he wasn’t about to admit that to the vampire. Nikolas was a skeptic, and he so hated to get into arguments about his visions with skeptics. He liked people who believed him on faith. It saved time and, sometimes, lives as well. Obviously, that would not be the case with this vampire.

“Going out?”

“I was thinking about taking a walk.”

“I would rather discuss this in private.”

“Of course.” Ryder nodded and moved back to allow Nikolas to enter.

Nik looked around the hotel room with approval. The man seemed tidy enough, and he didn’t seem to have any issues with alcohol, smoking, or drugs. He could usually smell that on a person. It was a putrid smell that emanated from their pores no matter how often they showered. A regular human wouldn’t smell it, but a vampire, with heightened senses, was not that lucky.

“This experience you have with rogues . . . Tell me about it.”

Ryder moved to the kitchen where he pulled out a bottle of water and took a quick swig. He took his time answering, but that was okay. Nikolas didn’t mind. Time was different for a vampire. They often lost the sense of time all together.

“Man got attacked by a vampire, changed, then went back home and decided to hold his family hostage. He drained his wife before I was called on scene, and as soon as I apprehended him, we found his children hiding in the attic. They were traumatized but unharmed. Although, I don’t know what that counts for since they’re orphaned now.”

“They’re alive. That counts for something.”

“I suppose.”

Nik watched the man carefully. He could tell more about people by watching them than by listening to what they had to say. A man could easily lie with words, but everyone—absolutely everyone—had tells that allowed him to pick out what was true and what was not. Ryder was an honest man. And what was more? He didn’t conceal his feelings. What he was feeling was depicted clearly on his face. Nikolas had to be sure though before he hired him. He was about to entrust him with the most imp—with someone’s life.

Besides, it was his fault in the first place that Iris was in danger. If he hadn’t asked her to marry him . . . He had broken so many of his own rules. One woman had turned his whole world upside-down and inside-out. He didn’t know how the hell he was going to get her out of his mind.

She was a constant thought. Now, with the rogues out and about, she was also a constant cause for worry. How was she and Anaïs getting along? He knew he had hurt her by asking Anaïs to accompany her, but that was preferable to leaving her alone and vulnerable. Nothing could happen to Iris. He’d die of guilt.

“You haven’t listened to a single word I have said.”

Nik scowled toward Ryder. Of course he hadn’t been listening.
